Our teeth are vital for lots of reasons. They help us eat, chew and digest our food as well as helping us to talk and pronounce our words. They help to give our face its shape and healthy teeth look great when we smile.

There are two main problems that affect our teeth if we don’t take care of them:

Decay that can cause pain, discomfort and destruction of the tooth structure necessitating dental treatments such as fillings and crowns to rebuild them.

Gum disease that destroys the structures that support our teeth so they eventually become loose and need to be removed.

Neglecting the wellbeing of our teeth can lead to decay, gum disease and a whole host of other more serious medical issues. That’s why it’s essential to keep your mouth clean and healthy. A simple homecare regime of brushing and flossing, good diet and regular visits to your dentist is all it takes to prevent most dental problems.

A preventive approach, such as we provide here at Holbrooks Dental Care, is the best approach.

Regular dental visits for a thorough examination, and scale and polish provides a host of benefits:

  • Fewer fillings because problems are caught early
  • Less dental decay due to regular examinations
  • A decreased chance of experiencing toothache
  • More attractive teeth, stronger gums and fresher breath
  • Reduce the risk of serious medical conditions
  • Prevent gum recession, loose or drifting teeth
  • Reduce tooth sensitivity
  • If you don’t brush your teeth, plaque builds up that eventually breaks down the tooth’s structure, causing decay and leading to gum disease. Efficient and regular removal of plaque is the most important factor in keeping our mouths healthy.

  • Gum disease is a common condition that can cause bad breath and sore, swollen or bleeding gums. If left untreated, it can eventually lead to tooth loss. It can also affect your overall health, with links now established between gum disease, heart disease, diabetes and strokes. That’s why regular visits to your dentist are so important.

    • Brushing your teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.
    • Reducing the frequency of sugary drinks and snacks
    • Using a small to medium toothbrush with soft to medium multi-tufted, round-ended nylon bristles.
    • Changing your toothbrush regularly, at least three-monthly.
    • Cleaning daily between your teeth with dental floss or interdental brushes.
    • Visiting your dentist at least once a year.
  • We recommend our patients visit us at least once a year but your dentist will advise you following your dental examination.
